1649. Bals, W. Jan. 22. Latches; l o c k s, key. -Door locks and fastenings specially suitable for doors on ships are arranged to prevent accidental opening. The striking - plate, in the form shown, has a spur-wbeel c held against motion in one direction by a spring detent d, so as to allow the end a' of the bolt to pass into engagement but only to allow disengagement when the bolt is withdrawn by turning the handle. Instead of the wheel c, two spring-controlled pivoted jaws may be employed, the end of the bolt being wedge-shaped. The latch bolt may be combined with a mortice or case lock.
